I am 6’10” tall, 65 years old. Before 2025, I had not ridden a bike since 1990. Then I drove my brother’s RV while he participated in RAGBRAI. (If you don’t know what that is, look it up). Seeing how much everyone enjoyed themselves made me want to ride again. Plus, it’s a great low impact exercise for people with bad knees, repaired tendons, etc.
After RAGBRAI, I started doing research. There was no internet last time I bought a bike……. My old bike was a name brand, but not quite big enough, and I was always breaking spokes, chains, pedals, whatever. (I also broke my share of spin bikes). I realized that I had never had bike big enough for my frame. I also realized that just contracting with a local shop for a custom bike probably wouldn’t be good enough, because there is more to building a bike for a tall person than just making it larger. I found Clydesdale Bikes website, read the history, contacted them, and decided this was where to get my bike. They understand bikes, biking and the kind of stresses tall, heavy bodies put on bikes.
I submitted my measurements according to the directions at the website, then after some communications with Nick at the store, decided on a Gravel Bike with 750D wheels. Throughout the process I had numerous questions, all of which were patiently answered. I even flew to Colorado to talk to them in person, and got to ride a bike similar to what was being built for me. (You can get a great bike without visiting the shop, but I am glad I did visit) Besides my questions, my brother had a long list, he is an experienced rider, and he liked everything he heard.
After a few months of waiting, my bike arrived via UPS. Final Assembly was easy, and I started riding. It’s true what they say about never forgetting how to ride a bike, but I was still pretty shaky at first. I’ve been riding near my home in San Jose, and have even been on gravel a few times. Having a bike that truly fits me is an amazing experience, and I have not broken any part of it! I get more comfortable on it every time I ride. Longest ride so far is 21 miles.
4XL frame made of titanium, 215 mm cranks, 50 CM wide handlebars, XL pedals, custom built wheels, everything constructed with a big guy in mind.
My bike was truly money well spent, and I can’t say enough good things about the prompt and thorough customer service I received. Special shout out to Nick.
If you are someone who is on the edges of the bell curve, you can’t do better than buying a bike from these guys.
